Standing up for Whaley Bridge

Ruth with volunteers at Elnor Lane Park

Dear Neighbour

You need a councillor who understands and cares about Whaley Bridge.

I have been honoured to be your county councillor for the last 5 years and am very much a part of our local community.

I moved to just outside Whaley 20 years ago after 15 years in New Mills. I brought up my 4 children here, all attending local schools.  My grandson starts at Whaley Primary this year!

I believe strongly that this area should remain in a Derbyshire council – NOT Manchester.  I have long advocated for two unitary councils, with High Peak in Northern Derbyshire.

I’m standing as an Independent candidate so I’m free from party pressures and able to stand up for people in this area as my top priority.

I have a strong track record of fighting for local people:

  • I hold four advice surgeries each month – in Whaley Bridge, Furness Vale, Chinley and Buxworth – one each in the morning, afternoon and evening and at a weekend to give as many people as possible the opportunity to seek my help.
  • Social care accounts for 40% of DCC’s budget and is vital for many people. I led the campaign against the proposed closure of Eccles Fold Day Centre and Whitestones Care Home, ensuring that both stayed open and now serve more people.
  • I work as a carer in the early mornings to give me a deeper understanding of the issues faced by people needing care, by their loved ones and by care staff.  I love helping my vulnerable clients, and my experience has helped me to better advocate for people needing help with our complicated care system.
  • I support local families and schools by recycling uniforms from 6 local schools each year, washing and then selling all items for £1 to raise funds for PTAs, reduce waste and help families to afford uniforms.

I’ve listed a few of the things I’ve achieved specifically in Whaley Bridge and some of my priorities for the future in another related post which you can read by clicking here.

I would welcome hearing from you about your priorities, so please do get in touch using the contact form or by sending an email to [email protected].

If you want a councillor who is independent, hard-working and there for you, please support me on 1st May.
